Advanced Practitioner Radiographers lead the way in delivering breast screening results at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust
19 February 2021

Recently published research in the British Journal of Radiology explores the perceptions of Advanced Practitioner Radiographers in delivering all biopsy results to NHS breast screening patients. This study has identified important enabling factors and challenges concerning role extension.
East Lancashire Breast Screening Unit (ELBSU) has become the first known fully radiographer-led results service for breast screening patients; improving overall efficiency, patient satisfaction and team cohesion. The research has acknowledged that the extended role is within the radiography scope of practice and demonstrates the evolving nature of advanced practice since the four tier implementation. Given the current and future anticipated workforce issues, consideration by other breast units may address service-needs.
Particularly during the Covid-19 response, radiographer-led results clinics have assisted in the local breast-screening recovery plan. ELBSU radiographers have developed advanced communication skills and an intrinsic understanding of patient management whilst demonstrating advanced practice benefiting both patients and the wider radiography profession.
